What is a naming convention?
As a marketing technology professional, maintaining system standardization and consistency in HubSpot is crucial for your success. One of the core ways data professionals accomplish this is by coming up with something called a “naming convention”. A naming convention works like a recipe you can follow when coming up with names for various elements like properties, categories, groups, email campaigns, landing pages, contact lists, forms, workflows and more. Naming conventions ensure that each element follows the same rules reducing the risk of duplicates, increasing reporting accuracy, and a whole host of other benefits.
Our goals are:
Consistency: Apply these conventions uniformly across your HubSpot portal. Clarity: Avoid jargon. Use names that clearly describe the item’s purpose. Brevity: Keep names short but informative. Avoid unnecessary words. Standardization: Use similar naming conventions across related items for easy identification and grouping. Version Control: Include dates in names for items that are periodically updated.
Each element in the system that can be standardized would benefit from it. How far your organization takes that is up to internal discussion.
